09.17.12 — SF 49ers: Superstars of Visual Social Media

October 16, 2012 by scott / Comment (0)

A couple of weeks ago, I encouraged artists to up their game by using either their Instagram or Twitter accounts by breaking past the mundane and showing off a more artistic side — little did I expect, of the 1500+ celebrities we track on our sister site TheyPosted, that the entity that would take visual social media to the next level, would be Read More…

    Tipsheet Email April 16, 2012 — Facebook / Instagram / Visual Marketing

    May 14, 2012 by scott / Comment (0)

So, after Facebook’s purchase of Instagram last week for a cool billion, does anyone need any more convincing that we are moving towards visual-based communications?

Anyway, Facebook. Timeline. What the f is going on? I didn’t want to say it in my email a couple weeks ago because I was unsure of the results after the changeover (and I have more than a couple friends that work at these places), but Facebook’s conversion to Timeline is KILLING traffic to Facebook apps.

What’s a band / club / store / station to do? Go back to square one, plain & simple — instead of putting all your energy into pimping out your Facebook profile, use your Facebook presence to Read More…

Tipsheet Email Nov 28, 2011 — 2012 the Year of Visual Social Commerce

        by scott / Comment (0)

Hope you are all having a phenomenal holiday sales season, I’m already eyeballing bigger & better things for 2012. I wanted to go back to what I was saying in May of this year — that image-based communication is going to be one of the biggest trends of the year.

And sure enough, 6 months later –
        Pinterest Reports 2000% Growth
Instagram Nearly Triples Users to 10 Million
Tumblr Goes from 1 Billion to 10 Billion Posts in 1 Year

And as big as these numbers are, they are only going to get bigger, especially as tablets replace laptops. Less typing / more snapping, hop on it.

Case in point — Read More…

Tipsheet Email Sept 19, 2011 — Release Date is NOT the End of the Campaign

          October 3, 2011 by scott / Comment (0)

Last week at SF Music Tech Summit, Ethan Kaplan said something very telling yet true: “The worst thing you can do to keep fans actively engaged… is to actually release the album.”

Think about that — just because the album comes out does not mean Read More…

Tipsheet Email June 6, 2011 – Tim Burton, Museum of Me, Instagram

            June 9, 2011 by scott / Comment (0)

Dropped by the Tim Burton exhibit at LACMA over the weekend, was completely blown away. Yes, all the props and models from movies like Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas, etc. were great, but what blew me away were the rooms devoted to his formative years, before he was a Somebody. It’s all laid out, page by page, work by work, from Read More…

Tipsheet Email May 16, 2011 – NARM, Abandon Text / Go Visual

              by scott / Comment (0)

What a great NARM this year! While a far cry from more rambunctious days (two words: Richard Cottrell), NARM provided a more sober backdrop to the business part of the music biz. The labels brought out some serious star power (Tyrese, Jeff Bridges & T Bone Burnett, Annie Lennox, Manilow, Al Jardine, Brian Wilson, a Pink Floyd remasters event at the Capitol studios) to remind us why we started in this business, introduced us to a few up & comers that Read More…

Tipsheet Email May 9, 2011 — Music Hack Day, APIs

                by scott / Comment (0)

While we can all ponder over what happens next in this WMG / EMI chess game being played out by billionaires and hedge fund managers, I’m more intrigued these days by the future of music and how it will be shared in the coming years. Perfectly happy returning home after a brief visit to New Orleans for Jazzfest, a part of me was wishing I was in SF for Music Hack Day on Sunday.

I’ve been spending a good bit of time looking at Very Pretty Things online – Read More…

I know I’ve said this before — download Instagram for your iPhone asap. If you’re a band, a store, a radio station, a venue owner, you need this app. Not to help sell more tickets and merch, not to build some crazy big marketing campaign, but to flesh out your identity in a short-form world.

Gone are flash intros, gone are intricate Read More…

                    NMT Email Feb 7, 2011 — SXSW, Instagram, Comic-Con

                    February 6, 2011 by scott / Comment (1)

SXSW is a month away, are you ready? You’ve got your bands booked at the right venues and the right parties, but do you have a plan in place to exploit those appearances outside the 512? Do you have space on the guest list to invite non-industry fans via Twitter and Facebook promotions? Do you have your team in place to stream content live via Ustream and archive a couple extra pieces on YouTube? Do you have a scavenger hunt set up via Foursquare check-ins? Will you have an event-specific signed poster to hand out to anyone who checks in via Gowalla?

SXSW has always been the launchpad for the Next Big Thing in music, but ever since Twitter emerged in 2007, SXSW has become the launchpad for the Next Big Thing in technology. Mark it — this year,  Read More…
